The mission of Coastal Enterprises, Inc. (CEI) is to help create economically and environmentally healthy communities in which all people, especially those with low incomes, can reach their full potential. CEI provides development financing, individual consultation and training to support the development of micro and small businesses, community facilities and affordable housing. CEI also engages in advocacy and policy development in areas strategic to its mission, including rural community development and natural resources issues. Primarily focused on the rural Maine market, CEI also provides development financing to select projects in rural communities in Northern New England and upstate New York. Since its inception in 1977, CEI has provided over $460.7 million in financing to 1,989 enterprises with 23,266 jobs; created/preserved 1,261 units of affordable housing; provided training and counseling to 29,931 individuals and small businesses; and created/preserved 4,599 child care slots. CEI is guided by a Triple Bottom Line or 3E strategy that targets positive outcomes in the economy, in equity (i.e., low-income impact) and in the environment.
CEI has a staff of 78 and a community-based 17-member Board of Directors. Long recognized as one of the country's premier rural development practitioners, CEI received the Excellence Award in Community Economic Development from Southern New Hampshire University in 2007 and awards for excellence in nonprofit management from the Maine Association of Nonprofits and the Maine Community Foundation’s Noyce Award. CEI was a 2009 semifinalist for the prestigious Wachovia NEXT Awards.
